A stunning example of English Arts & Crafts silver, this covered bowl has splayed ring foot and a fitted, domed lid with wonderful applied geometric decoration and a cast and applied handle. The body and lid exhibit wonderful, soft hammering. Due to its rarity, Dunstan Pruden’s work is seldom seen on the market today.
Alfred Charles Pruden, known as Dunstan Pruden, started working in the 1930’s in Ditchling, near Brighton, England. He is most famous for producing ecclesiastical items, some of which are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. As director of the silver section at the Brighton Art School, he taught many silversmiths including Gerald Benney.
This covered bowl comes with a letter written by the original owner who states he/she purchased the item directly from the maker.
This lovely sterling silver bowl is fully hallmarked underneath along with the maker’s mark, ‘ACP’, for Alfred Charles Pruden. The lid is struck with the date mark and lion passant. It measures 3.25 inches high by 5 inches wide, weighs 9.95 troy ounces and is in excellent condition.
