John Wendt (attr.) 'Medallion' Sterling Child's Cup, 1866
This beautiful child's cup features an applied medallion with a classical figure against a horizontal lined background and beaded border with a large bead at the top. On the reverse side is an exact applied medallion without the figure or lined background. This was usually
intended for an initial engraving which was never done. Both medallions are framed with wonderful classical engraving. The front of the cup is inscribed 'Henry Sherman
Redfield/ 1866'. Attached at the side is a lovely wire-wrapped loop handle.
Henry Sherman Redfield lived in Hartford Connecticut and worked as a banker and then stock broker. He appears to have been the great-great grandson of Levi Redfield, the
revolutionary war soldier and memoirist.
This lovely sterling silver cup is marked (triple-struck) underneath '925/1000' in a shield. This mark is seen on
documented pieces by John Wendt (see Silver Magazine May-June 1992, p. 13). It measures 3 inches high, weighs 3.95 troy ounces and is in very good/excellent antique
condition with some fire scale to the surface.
