Antique Sheffield Plate Pair of Wine Coolers, England, c. 1820

This wonderful pair of antique Sheffield plate coolers are in a classic campana form. The pedestal shaped bases are decorated with dense depictions of grape leaves and bunches of grapes.

Magnificent applied oak leaves and acorns adorn the bulbous lower section of the body. This decoration emanates from twisted branch handles. The cascading rim is decorated similarly to the base, featuring stunning representations of grape leaves and bunches of grapes hanging over the rim.

The plain areas of the front and back of the coolers are engraved with a beautiful crest underneath a banner with the motto 'NIL DE SPERANDUM', most likely for the Ogilvie (Ogilvy) family of Scotland.

One good indication of antique Sheffield plate is the presence on an inset blank of silver in the bodies. This was done so that when engraving heraldic devices on antique Sheffield plate the engraving would not go through the silver exposing the copper underneath. These stunning coolers have their original removable liner inserts and collars.

The first cooler is unmarked and the second one is marked with the number 2 on the insert, collar and rim. They measure 9.75 inches across the handles by 10.5 inches high and are in very good/ excellent antique condition with a couple minor dings underneath the body.
