Shiebler Antique Sterling and 14k Gold Medallion Bonbon Dish, NY, c. 1880s

1 item left

Some of the most imaginative wares produced by Shiebler were created in their Medallion or Homeric line of holloware. This amusingly shaped sweetmeat serving dish has an irregularly shaped bowl attached to a curved handle terminating with a hairy paw foot. Two smaller, figural feet near the front elevate the bowl.

The bowl features a 14k gold roman bust profile medallion centered within an irregular aesthetic starburst with cloud designs. The handle has a hammered background with chased lines and two inlaid 14k gold medallions.

Provenance: Private Collection.

This rare antique dish is marked with Shiebler's winged 'S' trademark and 'STERLING & 14K/ 174x' and by the retailer 'J.C. GROGAN.' Below the marks underneath the front of the bowl is engraved an 'AFL' monogram. This dish measures 10.25 inches long by 4 inches high, weighs 9.40 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with wear to the interior gilding.
