Karl Leinonen Arts and Crafts Sterling Silver Presentation Trophy Bowl, Boston, MA, 1928

This wonderful bowl was a steeplechase trophy and features ten dramatic lobes abound the body. Wonderful allover hammering makes the bowl sparkle. The underside of the rim has an applied band of silver, and another applied band decorates the bottom of the spreading foot.

Engraved around the rim of the bowl is:

NORFOLK HUNT CLUB SECOND AUTUMN MEETING OCTOBER 13, 1928 THE GOLF LINKS STEEPLECHASE PRESENTED BY MRS. HENRY G. VAUGHAN WON BY BLACK PEPPER. 

According to their website, 'The Norfolk Hunt Club is one of the oldest registered Fox Hunts in the United States. Norfolk began as a drag hunt in Dedham, Massachusetts in 1895 and moved to Dover, Massachusetts in 1903.' (see www.norfolkhunt.com).

Henry G. Vaughan married Elise Tyson of Hamilton House, South Berwick, ME and they lived in Sherbourne, MA.  He was a lawyer and the son of Mr & Mrs Benjamin Vaugan of Cambridge, MA. His mother was a member of the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston, so their support of the arts & crafts movement ran in the family.

This bowl was raised by Karl Leinonen, a Finnish immigrant silversmith, who ultimately would receive the Society of Arts and Crafts highest award for his craft, the designation of 'Medalist' - one of only eight silversmiths to be so honored. He exhibited at many Arts & Crafts exhibitions including at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. Leinonen's fine work can be found in museum collections, including at the MFA, Boston.

This beautiful sterling bowl measures 10 inches in diameter by just under 4 inches high. It weighs 24.25 troy ounces and is in very good condition (some very minor scratches to the interior from use). It is marked 'KFL/ STERLING/ 256'.
